Baltimore County School Bus Accident — Children Hurt

Children Suffer Minor Injuries in Baltimore County School Bus Accident

A Baltimore County school bus careened off the roadin early October as it was taking Pikesville Middle School students to school, landing upside down in a gully, reported The Baltimore Sun. Five of the 10 students on the bus were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. The bus driver was also treated and released. Though the bus did not have seat belts for the students, the worst injury was apparently a sprained ankle in the bus crash.

Authorities are uncertain what caused the bus accident. The bus, traveling in the 10800 block of Greenspring Avenue, skidded sharply off the roadway at about 7:30 a.m., went nearly end over end, and ended up nearly upside down. The students and the driver climbed out of emergency exits. The bus crash broke windows in the bus, and a tree damaged the front wheel well.

School officials disclosed that the bus has three cameras on board — one facing forward and two facing back. Authorities plan to review the footage to see if anything can be learned as a result of the bus accident. The driver will also be questioned and was required to submit to a drug and alcohol screen as part of the school’s routine bus crash investigation.

Howard County Police Officer Injured in Car Accident

A Howard County law enforcement officer was listed in stable conditionSafety-Tips-for-Summertime-Pool-Fun at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center after suffering injuries in a multivehicle car accident on westbound I-70 near Marriottsville Road, according to Howard County Police. The officer, a 10-year veteran of the force, was sitting in his patrol car after making a routine traffic stop when his vehicle was struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by a man from Taneytown. No one else was injured in the car accident.

At the time of the car crash, the police vehicle and the car that had been stopped were both completely off the road. Authorities believe that the driver of the pickup may have fallen asleep just before the car accident, causing him to drift off the road and strike the police car. The car accident occurred at 11:37 p.m. on Monday, September 16, 2013. All westbound traffic was shut down for about two hours after the car crash.
