Thirteen Arrested in Prostitution Sting

Howard County law enforcement officers conducted a sting at a hotel in Jessup last month, leading to the arrest of 13 men, all charged with prostitution-related offenses. A spokesperson said the sting involved the placement of a fake ad on the website Backpage, which is a popular website for men seeking prostitutes. As men called in, they were allowed to talk to undercover female officers, who arranged a meeting at the hotel. When the men arrived at the room, they were placed under arrest.

According to police, it’s part of an ongoing program designed to end human trafficking in Howard County. A similar undercover effort nabbed eight men at a hotel in North Laurel in early February.

Statistics Show Distracted Drivers Still Major Cause of Traffic Accidents

Statistics-Show-Distracted-Drivers-Still-Major-Cause-of-Traffic-Accidents

According to the federal government, distracted driving accounts for about one in every 10 traffic fatalities. Though that number of fatalities in 2012 decreased slightly—from 3,360 to 3,328—the number of accidents involving distracted drivers went up dramatically, increasing by more than 30,000.

As defined on the government’s website, distracted driving includes any act that draws a driver’s attention away from his or her primary task—safely operating a vehicle on the road. The use of a handheld device continues to be one of the most significant concerns. Researchers report that nearly 700,000 people are simultaneously driving and texting/talking at any given moment. They note that the average time that a person will divert attention from the road to send or receive an e-mail or text message, or to look at weather, directions or other information on a handheld device, is about five seconds—the length of time it would take to drive the length of a football field at 55 miles per hour.

The use of a device, however, is not the only significant cause of distracted driving. Officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that distracted driving covered a broad range of activities, from grooming behind the wheel to reading a book or map, from eating and drinking to having a conversation with passengers in the back seat, from adjusting an in-dash stereo to watching a video.

According to statistics, younger drivers are more likely to drive while distracted. More than 25% of the distracted drivers involved in traffic fatalities were in their 20s. One in 10 of drivers in fatal accidents were between the ages of 16 and 19. One out of every four drivers under the age of 20 said they regularly send or respond to text messages while driving, and one in five say they frequently have multi-message text conversations while behind the wheel.

Interestingly, the research showed that using a hands-free device, such as a headset or Bluetooth, did not significantly diminish the risk of an accident.

SUV Rollover Crashes

SUV-Rollover-Crashes

In 2000, the myth of SUVs being safe cars was revealed as fiction, when statistics revealed they were among the most dangerous cars on the road when it came to rollovers. Their height and weight contributed to the rollover potential and seriousness of injuries when crashes did occur.

However, SUV manufacturers have since taken steps since that time and it appears that SUVs are the least likely to be involved in deadly rollovers. In fact, in 2009, an Institute of Highway Safety Report revealed a dramatic reduction in deadly rollover accidents.

Safety Issues and SUVs

SUV manufacturers took great interest in making their motor vehicles as safe as possible, by adding an electronic stability control system that kicks in when SUVs must make abrupt turns or when they are skidding on slippery roads. Nonetheless, rollover accidents are 27% more likely to occur in an SUV, with more than 61% of SUV fatalities resulting from an SUV rollover crash.

When SUV rollovers do occur, serious injuries, sometimes fatal, do result. Roof intrusion and roof contact injury, meaning that the accident victims have been slammed into the roof either due to the roof crashing in on them or them falling from gravity into the roof, can result in traumatic brain injury (TBI), including concussion and permanent brain damage, as well as open head wounds.

Head and brain injuries both serious and minor, are the most common types of injuries that occur when there is a rollover crash with an SUV. If you have suffered a serious injury or if a loved one has been injured as a result of an SUV rollover accident caused by someone else’s carelessness or recklessness, you may have reason to seek recovery through a personal injury legal claim.

Columbia Man Arrested on Child Pornography Charges

A 45-year-old Columbia man was arrested last Thursday by Maryland State Police, charged with multiple counts of owning, possessing and distributing child pornography. Jose G. Rodriguez, a resident in the 5600 block of Steven Forest Road, was detained by officers from the Computer Crimes Unit after they conducted a search of his home, pursuant to a warrant. Officials say they received information recently that led them to initiate an investigation. During the course of that investigation, they identified Rodriguez as being involved in the dissemination of child pornography.

A spokesperson for the Maryland State Police said the investigation began in late February when they received an internet-based tip. During the search last Thursday, conducted jointly by the state police and by Homeland Security agents, officers found evidence of child pornography on his cell phone.

Hotel Staff Help Police Make Human Trafficking Arrest

Suspecting that the hotel was being used for prostitution, the staff at a hotel in Ellicott City tipped off police, who arrested a 39-year-old Elkton man and charged him with human trafficking. According to police, the suspect, Berris Munroe advertised the services of a 21-year-old New York woman online, and would arrange to bring her to the hotel to provide sexual services to customers.

Employees of the hotel, which has thus far not been named, apparently called police on Monday after seeing traffic in and out of one of the rooms. When police arrived, they found Munroe and the young woman in the room. Monroe was also charged with disorderly conduct. The woman has been placed with a victim advocate service to help her get back to New York.
