Distracted Driving Becoming a National Problem

Distracted Driving

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more and more motorists are involved in more and more accidents every year because they are distracted while behind the wheel. One of the most common culprits is a handheld device..statistics show that up to half of all drivers admit to sending or reading text messages while driving. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that cell phones alone play a part in about 1.6 million motor vehicle accident every year.

Experts say the distractions take three forms:

  • visual distractions, which take your eyes off the road
  • manual distractions, which take your hands off the wheel
  • cognitive distractions, which take your mental focus off the task at hand—driving

Handheld devices, such as cell phones and tablets, are among the most dangerous distractions, say authorities, because they typically involve some level of all three distractions.

School Bus Accident Investigated by Howard County Police

School Bus Accident Subject of Howard County Police Investigation

A school bus accident on June 6, 2013 occurred when a school bus carrying 55 students from Centennial Lane Elementary School was involved in a three-car crash, sending 9 people, including five schoolchildren, to the hospital. All were subsequently released with minor injuries.

According to police, the school bus was traveling south on Centennial Lane, about a half mile from the school, at around 8:30 a.m. on June 6th, when the bus collided with a van, which then struck a car. The bus driver and five children went to the hospital, as did the driver and two adult passengers in the van. The driver of the car was not hurt.

The school bus accident resulted in police ticketing the bus driver for failure to control his speed to avoid a collision, and with negligence while operating a motor vehicle. They believe the bus driver may have turned his attention away from the road to address students on the bus when the school bus accident occurred. Officials said the school bus accident was not serious and that the children reported “bumps and bruises.”

Prince George’s Police Officer Dies in Crash

Police Officer Killed in Crash While Pursuing Speeding Vehicle

A 26-year-old Prince George’s police officer died in the early hours of March 7 when he lost control of his police vehicle and crashed into a fence near the corner of Greenbelt and Good Luck Roads in Lanham. According to fellow officers, the young officer was off-duty at the time and was taking his girlfriend home when he saw a motorist driving at a high rate of speed. Police Chief Mark A Magaw said that the officer called in to report the speeding vehicle and told dispatchers, “I have to stop this guy before he kills somebody.”

A woman who was in the cruiser with the officer told officials that she thought he was going to slow down when he lost control of the vehicle and struck the wooden privacy fence. The woman was treated and released for minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle never stopped.

Prince George’s Police Department officials say the officer’s dashboard mounted camera was broken at the time of the accident. They say, though, that witnesses may have seen a tour bus in the vicinity of the crash.

The deceased officer had been with the Prince George’s Police Department for less than two years.

Documenting Your Medical Condition After an Accident

If you’re reading this note, then you most likely have been in an accident caused by another, and suffered injuries. You may be wondering how to protect your rights to medical treatment and other compensation in a personal injury claim.

Obviously, the majority of those injured in car accidents and other types of accidents aren’t thinking about photographing their injuries and the scene of the accident, but this documentation can be extremely helpful and make navigating a personal injury claim easier, whether or not you ultimately decide to retain a lawyer or pursue the claim directly with the insurance company.

First, you ideally would photograph damage to all involved cars, the scene of the crash from all pertinent angles, and bumps and bruises that are visible right away. Visit a doctor or an emergency room and maintain those records. Additionally, you will want to keep a record of any diagnosis and treatment plans from health care providers, as well as copies of correspondence from insurers. The initial hospital or doctor intake can provide a baseline for your recovery process. Store all of this in a file so you know where everything is. This helps make it easier to obtain reimbursement.

When people don’t keep records these items, it can be more difficult to prove the claim, especially when it comes time to negotiating a settlement. It can clearly bring home the challenges you have faced if the injuries are visible and you can see the damage that happened to the vehicles.

Another important factor is creating an “accident” journal or accident file on your computer. In this real or e-diary, you will record your recovery process. This will help you document what you went through, medical treatment you received over time, and how you felt and thought about the process as you went through it.

This information can be particularly useful as you or your attorney negotiates a settlement, particularly if there is going to be a value placed on your pain and suffering that is accident related.

Police Investigate Multi-Vehicle Crash

Two People Suffer Life-Threatening Injuries in Car Crash

Two people were seriously hurt in a two-vehicle car crash near Route 100 West and Catherine Avenue in Pasadena on September 21, 2013, according to news reports. The car accident occurred just before 2 a.m.

Police believe that the two vehicles, a 2011 Nissan Altima and a 2008 Ford Ranger, were both traveling westbound on Route 100 when the Nissan hit the Ranger’s right rear corner, causing the Ford to spin out of control and travel into a small wooded area in the median. The Nissan also spun, overturned and came to rest in the median. The driver of the Nissan was thrown from his vehicle and landed in the median. Both drivers were transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and were listed in critical but stable condition.

Though the investigation remains underway, initial indications are that alcohol and excessive speed contributed to the crash. Police also believe that one or both drivers were not using seat belts at the time of the car crash.

Investigators Ask Whether Police Pursuit Caused Triple Road Fatality

Authorities Look Into Cause of Triple Road Fatality — Was Police Pursuit a Factor?

In the aftermath of a horrific crash in which three people burned to death, questions have been raised as to whether police were in pursuit of one of the vehicles at the time and whether that pursuit may have led to the collision, according to news reports. Police acknowledge that, prior to the crash, undercover officers were following one of the vehicles because they suspected illegal activity. An attorney for the police officers told news reporters that the officers received multiple transmissions before the accident, instructing them to end the pursuit, and that they did.

Though Baltimore police have limited circumstances under which they can engage in a chase, it is unknown how far these officers had trailed the vehicle and whether they were using lights or sirens at the time. To family members of the victims, there are concerns that the chase was not stopped in time and that the accident resulted.

Baltimore’s police commissioner has promised an investigation.
