Teens Take Distracted Driving Course

Education on Distracted Driving to Prevent Distracted Driving Accidents

Howard County high school students attended a Distracted Driving Presentation to educate them on the dangers of distracted driving, reported The Baltimore Sun. “Distract driving” includes phone use while driving, cell use while driving, and texting while driving. It also can include something as simple as brushing one’s hair, or unbuckling a seat belt.

Students quickly learned the dangers of distracted driving, including the risk of texting and driving accidents. They were given a Wii steering wheel and told to navigate a virtual road in Mario Kart while texting at the same time. When the game began, one student’s video game car immediately careened off the road. Within four minutes, the four students playing the game crashed their cars more than 20 times, sometimes running into walls, driving in the opposite direction or simply driving off a cliff.

What are Causes of Distracted Driving Accidents?

Distracted driving accidents can be caused by texting while driving, and cell phone use while driving, but there are many causes. They include:

  • Texting
  • Using a cell phone or smartphone
  • Eating and drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading, including maps
  • Using a navigation system
  • Watching a video
  • Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player

Distracted Driving Accident Statistics

In 2010, 3092 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an estimated additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver, according to U. S. government statistics. 18% of injury crashes in 2010 were reported as distraction-affected crashes.

Car Accidents Caused by Distracted Driving

Jonathan Scott Smith is a top-rated car accident lawyer, with over 30 years of courtroom experience. Case Studies in Distracted Driving Accidents

In one case successfully handled by Mr. Smith, a driver ran a red light, swerved to avoid another vehicle, ran up onto the median, and struck a pedestrian lawfully standing in the crosswalk. The pedestrian was catapulted into the air, landing on the road. She sustained traumatic injuries, including facial fractures; leg fractures; and other serious injuries. The investigating police officer was unable to determine why the accident happened. Mr. Smith sued the driver and questioned her in a deposition, where she admitted being on her cell phone at the time of the accident. Her insurance company paid the entire policy limits.

In another case, a driver was listening to a conference call on his cell phone, while at the same time the driver was adjusting the controls on his car’s heater, during heavy rush hour traffic. He rear-ended another car that had stopped in traffic, injuring the driver. The insurance company for the distracted driver paid a personal injury settlement.

Woman Injured In Anne Arundel County Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrian Accident Sends Woman to Shock Trauma

On November 28, 2012 at approximately 16:19 p.m., Anne Arundel County police officers responded to a pedestrian accident at East Central Avenue near West Shore Road, Edgewater, Maryland, the police department reported. The pedestrian was transported by helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma where she was listed in critical condition.

Preliminary evidence indicated that a 2005 Ford F-150 truck, driven by Michael Joseph Maszczenski Jr., was traveling east on East Central Avenue in the furthest right travel lane. The pedestrian, Susan Blanchard Harris, ran into the roadway from Maszczenski’s right and struck the right side of the truck. The truck’s right side mirror hit Ms. Harris’ head, and the mirror fell in the roadway after impact. The driver stopped at the scene and awaited assistance from responding emergency personnel. According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, pedestrian error was the primary contributing factor to this incident.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The most recent pedestrian accident statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U. S. Department of Transportation, indicate that there are 4,092 pedestrians killed and 59,000 injured in pedestrian accidents annually. A pedestrian has a high probability of being injured seriously, or being killed, in a pedestrian accident because cars and trucks are larger, heavier, and often travelling at high speeds.

That, together with social media, has resulted in many drivers talking on cell phones while driving; texting while driving; and reading emails while driving. Phone use while driving can now result in a car accident because the driver takes his or her attention off the road, and engages in distracted driving. There are now public safety campaigns to educate drivers, particular young drivers, about the dangers, such as http://www.enddd.org/.

Maryland Law Prohibits Cell Phone Use While Driving

A recent law enacted in Maryland prohibits the use of a cell phone while driving, including texting while driving and cell phone use while driving. There is an exception if the driver is using a hands free device, or making an emergency 911 call.

How Do You Find a Lawyer?

How to Find a Lawyer

When you need to find a lawyer, many people don’t know how to go about it, or where to start. Here are some basic ways to find a lawyer:

  • Ask family, friends, and co-workers for a referral. Often, other people you know and trust can tell you about their personal experience with an attorney.
  • Use Internet Search Engines. Using an internet search engine, such as Google, Yahoo, or Bing, can be a quick way to find lawyers. You should search both geographically and topically. For example, search “car accident lawyer” “Howard County, MD.”
  • Lawyer Directories. There are many online lawyer directories that can help you find a lawyer by searching the area of law and the geographical area where you want to find attorneys. Two of the largest and best lawyer directories are http://www.lawyers.com/ and http://www.findlaw.com/. A third trusted source is http://www.martindale.com/.

What to Do After a Commercial Truck Accident

Tractor Trailer Truck Accident and Fatal Trucking Accident Questions

Truck accidents are responsible for countless injuries and deaths throughout HowardFatal Truck Accident County and the state of Maryland. Knowing what to do if you are involved in a trucking accident could affect your, health, your injury claim and the amount of compensation you receive.

The most important thing is preserving your physical and mental health. The first thing you need to do is make sure you are alright, and then check on the condition of others. Remember, if someone is injured, and not in imminent danger, call 911 and let the medical professionals move and handle any injuries. You do not want to unnecessarily exacerbate a serious medical condition. Common injuries from trucking accidents include head injury, back injury, neck injury, damage to spinal cords, brain injury, and compound fractures (broken bones), as well as soft tissue injuries such as whiplash. Moreover, in many instances, injuries may not manifest themselves immediately; therefore, you should seek medical attention after an accident, even if you think you feel alright.

Once you have taken steps to ensure there are no health risks, you should report the trucking accident by calling the police. Be sure to note the name of the police officer reporting to the accident scene. Recall the events as best you can recollect, and as soon as possible after the accident, write down notes while things are still fresh in you mind.

The next step should be to identify witnesses. If possible, obtain the names and contact information for any witnesses, including bystanders or anyone who stopped to assist. Witnesses may be valuable if there is a dispute regarding the truck accident.

The next thing you should do, if possible, is take pictures. Use your phone if necessary. Pictures can be valuable, as they will record the scene, position and damage of the vehicles, weather conditions, etc. Remember, cars and trucks will be moved and likely repaired. This is your chance to document the condition of the accident scene and the vehicles. Also, ask the police if they can take pictures when they arrive.

Only talk to the police and answer their questions. Do not discuss the truck accident with anyone else, especially an insurance agent or claims adjuster until you have received advice and representation from an experienced personal injury attorney. Anything you say to anyone else will not help you, but may hurt you. Statements may be designed to be used against you when taken out of context.

Keep records of anything related to the accident, including medical records, bills, etc. relating to the truck accident.

And, of course, retain counsel from an experienced Maryland personal injury and truck accident lawyer.
