School Bus Accident Investigated by Howard County Police

School Bus Accident Subject of Howard County Police Investigation

A school bus accident on June 6, 2013 occurred when a school bus carrying 55 students from Centennial Lane Elementary School was involved in a three-car crash, sending 9 people, including five schoolchildren, to the hospital. All were subsequently released with minor injuries.

According to police, the school bus was traveling south on Centennial Lane, about a half mile from the school, at around 8:30 a.m. on June 6th, when the bus collided with a van, which then struck a car. The bus driver and five children went to the hospital, as did the driver and two adult passengers in the van. The driver of the car was not hurt.

The school bus accident resulted in police ticketing the bus driver for failure to control his speed to avoid a collision, and with negligence while operating a motor vehicle. They believe the bus driver may have turned his attention away from the road to address students on the bus when the school bus accident occurred. Officials said the school bus accident was not serious and that the children reported “bumps and bruises.”

Party Buses—Big Fun, Big Business and Serious Risk of Injury

Death and Catastrophic Injury Tied to Party Buses

As the number of “party buses” continues to skyrocket—estimates are that the industry has doubled in size over the last five years—the number of serious or fatal accidents tied to the vehicles has also escalated dramatically. One study indicates at least 20 deaths related to party buses in California alone, with most fatalities coming when a passenger either falls from a bus, or hits a bridge underpass.

The party bus concept has become extremely popular, as it offers participants the opportunity to attend events—most party buses go to sporting or entertainment events—without worrying about how much they drink. In fact, most party buses allow open containers and drinking on the bus, even while the bus is in motion. Additionally, many of the party buses are double-decker vehicles, with an open-air upper deck. In a number of instances, individuals on the upper deck have died or suffered serious injury after striking their head on a concrete bridge underpass.

Thus far, only a few states have tried to regulate the party bus industry. A New York state senator has introduced a bill that would set some standards, requiring that party bus drivers have a special license, and mandating the presence of chaperones, if there are underage passengers aboard. The Washington state legislature is looking at a new law that would prohibit the use of double-decker party buses by private operators.

Baltimore County School Bus Accident — Children Hurt

Children Suffer Minor Injuries in Baltimore County School Bus Accident

A Baltimore County school bus careened off the roadin early October as it was taking Pikesville Middle School students to school, landing upside down in a gully, reported The Baltimore Sun. Five of the 10 students on the bus were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. The bus driver was also treated and released. Though the bus did not have seat belts for the students, the worst injury was apparently a sprained ankle in the bus crash.

Authorities are uncertain what caused the bus accident. The bus, traveling in the 10800 block of Greenspring Avenue, skidded sharply off the roadway at about 7:30 a.m., went nearly end over end, and ended up nearly upside down. The students and the driver climbed out of emergency exits. The bus crash broke windows in the bus, and a tree damaged the front wheel well.

School officials disclosed that the bus has three cameras on board — one facing forward and two facing back. Authorities plan to review the footage to see if anything can be learned as a result of the bus accident. The driver will also be questioned and was required to submit to a drug and alcohol screen as part of the school’s routine bus crash investigation.

Passengers Injured in BWI Shuttle Bus Accident

Shuttle Bus Accident Injures Three at BWI Airport

A shuttle bus overturned Sunday morning, February 10, 2013, at BWI Airport, causing injuries to three passengers, The Baltimore Sun reported. The shuttle bus overturned near the intersection of Route 170 and Terminal Road at 6:30 a.m.

The Sun reported that three people were hurt. One refused medical treatment and the other two were transported via ambulance to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center with injuries.

Legal Claims for Injuries Caused in Bus Accidents

A driver of any vehicle is legally responsible if the driver’s recklessness, carelessness, or negligence is the cause of another person’s injuries, including passengers. This is true of a bus driver when injuries are caused by a bus accident that is the fault of the bus driver. In fact, when a driver is transporting passengers for hire, the law imposes an even higher duty to avoid harm to passengers compared to drivers who are not doing it for hire.

Mr. Smith successfully handled one shuttle bus accident at BWI Airport in which a police department employee and friend were returning from a vacation trip. They took a shuttle bus from BWI Airport to an airport parking lot company. The shuttle bus driver was driving aggressively and, at one point, slammed on his brakes. This caused the passenger to be thrown forward into the armrest of another seat in the shuttle bus. The armrest padding was missing, causing the woman’s leg to slam against a sharp metal bracket, resulting in a deep laceration and eventual scar. The injured bus passenger received a fair settlement for her injuries, medical expenses, and disfigurement.
