Overturned Tractor Trailer Causes Howard County Truck Accident

Semi Truck Overturns on I95 Exit Ramp to Route 100

On Thursday, July 26, 2012, Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services personnel responded to a semi truck accident on I-95 north. The semi truck was carrying 40,000 lbs of sugar. When the tractor trailer overturned, sugar and diesel fuel were dumped on the road, causing first responders to close the exit ramp to Route 100, reported The Baltimore Sun. Fortunately, the driver was not injured and managed to get out of the truck.

Semi Truck Accidents Can Cause Serious Injuries and Deaths

While this truck accident involved only the truck, and the driver escaped without injury, many semi truck accidents have caused catastrophic injuries and deaths. A truck accident can be caused by the truck driver falling asleep; an overloaded and overweight truck; and defective truck equipment from overuse or lack of necessary maintenance. Sometimes trucking companies and truck drivers are under pressure to keep costs down, and to move freight quickly. Safety takes a back seat, and innocent members of the public pay the price.

Howard County Teen Seriously Injured in Bicycle Accident

Columbia Teenager Injured in Car Bicycle Accident

On Monday, August 6, 2012, a Columbia teenager was injured seriously in a car bicycle accident. The 14-year old was riding a bicycle at the intersection of Governor Warfield Parkway and Twin Rivers Road at 12:50 p.m., according to The Baltimore Sun. A car drove through a green light and struck the bicyclist, resulting in a serious bicycle accident. The cyclist was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

The newspaper reported that police said the preliminary investigation revealed that the teen was crossing the intersection during a “Don’t Walk” signal, when the light was red. The driver of the 2010 Nissan Murano, Yyacheslav Guzeyev, 65, of Columbia, was not charged.

Injuries and Deaths from Bicycle Accidents

In 2010, 618 people were killed, and 52,000 people were injured, in bicycle accidents in the United States, according to a leading source of bicycle accident statistics. Cyclists are particularly susceptible to serious injuries, and even deaths, when they are involved in accidents with cars. There is little to protect them, and motor vehicles are capable of inflicting catastrophic harm.

Howard County Semi Truck Accident Blocks Route 29

Howard County Semi Truck Accident at Routes 29 and 32

At 9:35 a.m. on Friday, July 27, 2012, a tractor trailer overturned on Route 29 near its intersection with Route 32 in Howard County, causing the truck accident to block the entire road and snarl traffic, reported The Baltimore Sun. Howard County police stated that the driver of the semi truck and its passenger sustained only minor injuries.

The semi truck was the only vehicle involved in the truck accident, and police had not yet determined the cause.

Semi Truck Accident Statistics

There are approximately 295,000 truck accidents each year involving large trucks, according to the most recent federal government truck accident statistics. Only about 3% of those semi truck accidents involve a rollover.

Tractor trailer truck accidents can be some of the most serious, resulting not just in injuries, but deaths. This is because of the large size of tractor trailers, and the weight of the truck along with any cargo.

If you or a family member have been injured or killed as a result of a semi truck accident, or tractor trailer accident, an experienced truck accident lawyer can be of great assistance.

Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) & Personal Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a forceful blow or jolt to the head and/or a penetrating head injury hinders normal brain function. Nearly 2 million Americans sustain serious head injuries annually, and these injuries break down as the following statistics show:

  • 1.5 million people suffer nonfatal injuries without hospitalization
  • 300,000 people suffer injuries requiring hospitalization
  • 99,000 people sustain injuries resulting in long-term disability
  • 56,000 people die of their injuries

The most frequently cited causes of TBI are:

  • Sports injuries
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Falls
  • Occupational accidents
  • Assaults

Serious brain injuries can manifest symptoms as soon as a few hours after the accident and as long as days following the accident and may include:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Confusion
  • Slurred speech
  • Weakness or numbness in extremities
  • Loss of coordination
  • Persistent headaches
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Convulsions or seizures

Personal injury lawsuit for TBI

Often TBI victims can obtain compensation for a brain injury through a personal injury lawsuit. Many factors determine the success of a brain injury lawsuit, including the cause and responsible parties. If your brain injuries resulted from product defects, you may have a case against the product manufacturer and/or designer. If your injury resulted from a motor vehicle accident or medical malpractice, you may have cause to file a claim with the offender’s insurance companies. An experienced personal injury attorney can review the facts of your case and help you determine if you have cause to file a personal injury lawsuit.

Depending on the circumstances of your case, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your losses, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Rehabilitation costs
  • Equipment and home modification costs
  • Pain, suffering and emotional distress
  • Disability and disfigurement

If you or a loved one has sustained a serious brain injury, contact Jonathan Scott Smith online or call us at 410-740-0101 today to schedule a consultation.
