Rear End School Bus Accident in Howard County

On December 4, 2012, Howard County Police charged a driver with failure to reduce speed to avoid collision, after he allegedly rear-ended a school bus, reported The Baltimore Sun.

According to police, at 7:30 a.m. a Howard County school bus was exiting Governor Warfield Parkway onto Little Patuxent Parkway westbound when it was hit from behind. Police said the school bus had slowed down on the exit ramp to look for oncoming traffic.

Fortunately, no one was injured in this school bus crash. Other bus accidents have resulted in injuries, and even deaths.

Since 1998, 1,564 people have died in school transportation-related crashes—an average of 142 fatalities per year. Most of the people who lost their lives in those crashes (72%) were occupants of other vehicles involved. Non-occupants (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.) accounted for 20 percent of the deaths, and occupants of school transportation vehicles accounted for 8 percent.
