What Is PIP Insurance?

PIP Insurance Benefits in Car Accident Cases

What is PIP insurance? PIP is short for “Personal Injury Protection” coverage. In Maryland, PIP insurance coverage is required by law in all car insurance policies, unless the policy holder affirmatives waives the PIP insurance coverage. The minimum limits required by law in Maryland are $2,500.00. Some insurance companies, such as State Farm, offer greater limits, including $5,000.00 and $10,000.00.

What is Included in PIP Insurance Coverage?

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance coverage will pay for medical expenses and 85% of gross lost income if you are injured in a car accident. PIP insurance is a “no fault” coverage; it will pay regardless of whether you or another driver is at fault in causing the car accident. Making a claim under PIP insurance coverage will not increase your insurance premiums, because it is a no fault type of coverage. In addition, PIP insurance coverage is “primary” over health insurance, i.e. PIP insurance coverage benefits should pay first until they are exhausted, then your health insurance is responsible for paying after that.

How do I Claim PIP Insurance Benefits?

If you were injured in a car crash, you need to notify your car insurance company immediately that (1) you were involved in a car wreck, and (2) that you were injured. Most car insurance companies will then send you an application form to fill out and send back. (State Farm no longer requires completion of a PIP application.) You must then submit copies of medical records, medical bills, and lost income verification to your insurance company for payment.
