Philadelphia Amtrak Crash a Sign of Other Infrastructure Problems

Philadelphia-Amtrak-Crash-a-Sign-of-Other-Infrastructure-Problems

The real cause behind the Philadelphia Amtrak crash that killed eight people earlier this year remains in dispute. Amtrak officials say it was solely the fault of the train’s operator, but transportation advocates argue that the crash could have been avoided if Congress had ensured that positive train control mechanisms were in place. Nonetheless, many say that the infrastructure problems involving the nation’s railways are insignificant compared to the infrastructure problems with other modes of transportation. Here are some startling and potentially terrifying statistics:

  • The American Society of Civil Engineers says that many of the bridges in the United States are in desperate need of repair. They put the costs of making those bridges safe at $76 billion.
  • Experts say that the total amount spent annually to maintain roadways in the United States—approximately $45 billion, is less than half of what really needs to be spent.
  • Authorities say that nearly 200,000 miles of highways in the United States are considered in poor or mediocre shape.

Worker with Personal Injury Rescued on Chesapeake Bay Bridge

On Tuesday, June 4, 2013, around 10:45 a.m., rescue workers were called to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, where a bridge worker had fallen and sustained personal injury. According to authorities, the victim, a 51-year-old male, was working from a platform approximately 15 feet below the roadway near the center span when he was struck by a five-gallon paint bucket and fell onto the platform. A rescue worker immobilized the victim, who was then lifted up in a rescue basket, placed on a stretcher, and taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The entire rescue took about an hour and caused the westbound span of the bridge to be closed for nearly two hours. The Maryland Transportation Authority police are currently investigating to determine the cause of the accident.

Passengers Injured in BWI Shuttle Bus Accident

Shuttle Bus Accident Injures Three at BWI Airport

A shuttle bus overturned Sunday morning, February 10, 2013, at BWI Airport, causing injuries to three passengers, The Baltimore Sun reported. The shuttle bus overturned near the intersection of Route 170 and Terminal Road at 6:30 a.m.

The Sun reported that three people were hurt. One refused medical treatment and the other two were transported via ambulance to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center with injuries.

Legal Claims for Injuries Caused in Bus Accidents

A driver of any vehicle is legally responsible if the driver’s recklessness, carelessness, or negligence is the cause of another person’s injuries, including passengers. This is true of a bus driver when injuries are caused by a bus accident that is the fault of the bus driver. In fact, when a driver is transporting passengers for hire, the law imposes an even higher duty to avoid harm to passengers compared to drivers who are not doing it for hire.

Experienced Shuttle Bus Accident Lawyer Maryland

Jonathan Scott Smith is a top-rated accident lawyer, with over 30 years of courtroom experience. That’s why many satisfied clients think so highly of him.

Mr. Smith successfully handled one shuttle bus accident at BWI Airport in which a police department employee and friend were returning from a vacation trip. They took a shuttle bus from BWI Airport to an airport parking lot company. The shuttle bus driver was driving aggressively and, at one point, slammed on his brakes. This caused the passenger to be thrown forward into the armrest of another seat in the shuttle bus. The armrest padding was missing, causing the woman’s leg to slam against a sharp metal bracket, resulting in a deep laceration and eventual scar. The injured bus passenger received a fair settlement for her injuries, medical expenses, and disfigurement.

Two Childhood Friends Killed in Ellicott City Train Accident

Just one week before their scheduled return to college, two young women lost their lives when a train derailed in Ellicott City, Maryland, killing them both. They had been tweeting about being on a railroad bridge just minutes before.

Evidently, the women, both 19 and longtime friends, were seated at the edge of a bridge over Main Street when the train passed by. It derailed just a few feet behind them.

The CSX Company wrote in a statement: “Two young women tragically lost their lives in a train accident this morning near Ellicott City, Maryland. CSX wishes to offer its sincere condolences to their families.”

The tragic train accident in Ellicott City occurred around midnight on August 21. Evidently 21 of the 80 cars on the freight train derailed.

Investigators, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are now gathering facts to determine the cause of the train accident that buried both of the young women in coal. So far investigators have learned that an emergency brake did activate automatically. This type of automatic activation is typical in situations when a break in the airline of the train occurs.

Just three crewmembers were on board the train at the time of the Ellicott City train accident, including the conductor, engineer, and a training engineer. They noticed nothing unusual during the time leading up to the derailment.

Obviously, investigators will be seeking to determine if human error was a contributing factor to the train accident.

Teenager Killed in Pedestrian Accident

Teenager Dies in Anne Arundel Pedestrian Accident

On Thursday, December 20, 2012, a 15-year-old was struck by a car at an intersection at Maryland Route 198 in Anne Arundel County, reported The Baltimore Sun. The teenager was crossing at the intersection of Route 198 and Russett Green East around 5:59 a.m., when he was struck by a Chevrolet Camaro, according to the Anne Arundel Police Department.

Police said the car had a green light, and that the teenager was crossing at the intersection against a pedestrian traffic signal. Tragically, this pedestrian accident resulted in the teen’s death.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In 2010, there were 4,280 pedestrian accidents in the United States, data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicated. This is the second lowest annual rate since 1994, but any pedestrian accident is one too many. Pedestrian injuries from a pedestrian crash can be traumatic.

Woman Injured In Anne Arundel County Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrian Accident Sends Woman to Shock Trauma

On November 28, 2012 at approximately 16:19 p.m., Anne Arundel County police officers responded to a pedestrian accident at East Central Avenue near West Shore Road, Edgewater, Maryland, the police department reported. The pedestrian was transported by helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma where she was listed in critical condition.

Preliminary evidence indicated that a 2005 Ford F-150 truck, driven by Michael Joseph Maszczenski Jr., was traveling east on East Central Avenue in the furthest right travel lane. The pedestrian, Susan Blanchard Harris, ran into the roadway from Maszczenski’s right and struck the right side of the truck. The truck’s right side mirror hit Ms. Harris’ head, and the mirror fell in the roadway after impact. The driver stopped at the scene and awaited assistance from responding emergency personnel. According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, pedestrian error was the primary contributing factor to this incident.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The most recent pedestrian accident statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U. S. Department of Transportation, indicate that there are 4,092 pedestrians killed and 59,000 injured in pedestrian accidents annually. A pedestrian has a high probability of being injured seriously, or being killed, in a pedestrian accident because cars and trucks are larger, heavier, and often travelling at high speeds.

Four Injured in Howard County School Bus Accident

Bus Accident Injures Student and Drivers in Howard County

On Friday, November 16, 2012, two drivers and one student were injured after a school bus crash involving a Montgomery County school bus and a car on Route 97 in Howard County, The Baltimore Sun reported.

A police spokeswoman, Sherry Llewellyn, stated that at approximately 1:40 p.m. a Toyota Corolla traveling southbound on Route 97 clipped the school bus, which was traveling northbound, while attempting a left turn, according to the newspaper.

Any school bus crash can be a frightening experience for parents, who naturally are concerned for the welfare of their children.

School Bus Accident Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration compiles school bus accident statistics. Since 1998, 1,564 people have died in school transportation-related crashes—an average of 142 fatalities per year. Most of the people who lost their lives in those crashes (72%) were occupants of other vehicles involved. Non-occupants (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.) accounted for 20 percent of the deaths, and occupants of school transportation vehicles accounted for 8 percent.

MARC Train Injury

Train accidents are far more common than people think. An estimated 1000 people die in train accidents in the U.S. each year. Every 90 minutes, another train derails or is involved in a collision. The MARC, one of the fastest, and busiest commuter railway systems in our nation, has also has its fair share of accidents.

People injured in accidents involving MARC commuter trains can suffer devastating injuries, including brain injury, multiple broken bones, burns over their body, crushed lungs, and serious, disabling permanent injuries. In many cases, these accidents could have been prevented. Investigators have regularly found that negligence has caused or contributed to a train derailment, train collision, or other type of train crash.

The Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) train system includes three lines in the Baltimore-Washington metro area: The Camden Line, the Penn Line, and the Brunswick Line. MARC uses 84 trains during the week on its lines, with trains capable of traveling up to 125 miles an hour. It has actually been in service in one way or another since the 1830s, when it operated along what came to be known as the Camden Line.

Train Accidents and Human Error

Accidents have occurred throughout MARC’s existence, including many tragic incidents, such as the Feb. 16, 1996 collision of the Brunswick Line with an Amtrak train, killing 11 people aboard the MARC. Official investigation into the cause of the accident suggested that the collision might have been prevented if a human error analysis had been conducted and factored in when the track signaling system had been modified.

Another accident, on Feb. 7, 2008, occurred when an Amtrak switcher train struck and derailed a MARC train in Union Station. The Amtrak had been traveling too fast. Fortunately, just seven people suffered minor injuries.

This past May 2012, an unidentified man was killed after being struck by a southbound MARC train in Rosedale. That incident may still be under investigation.

Factors That Contribute to Train Crashes

Issues that may contribute to Maryland commuter train accidents include:

  • Failed computer systems
  • Poorly maintained train tracks that cause a train to go off course
  • Train operator/conductor distraction, including inattention due to texting, talking with colleagues, or talking on a cell phone
  • Outdated railcars or outdated equipment
  • Faulty train signals that place two trains on a collision course with one another

Negligence and Commuter Line Accidents

Negligence can play a role in commuter line accidents. The negligence may be on the part of train operators and employees. It may be negligence in making sure that the train’s sophisticated computer systems are working properly. It can involve poorly maintained train equipment. It can occur because potential safety and maintenance issues were not resolved before the train entered service.

Man Injured In Train Accident with Car

CSX Train Involved in Baltimore County Train Accident with Car

On Wednesday, August 8, 2012, an intermodal CSX train traveling north from Florida collided with a Volvo at the railway’s intersection with Schaefer’s Lane near Pulaski Highway, reported The Baltimore Sun. The driver of the car in the train accident was injured and transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center with serious injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

Apparently, the intersection did not have barrier arms that descend when a train is passing through, only signs warning of trains. This might have posed a hazard to the car’s driver, making a train accident more likely.

Howard County Train Derails on Same Day as Train Accident With Car

On the same day as the Baltimore County train accident, another CSX freight train briefly derailed in Woodstock, Howard County. The train was traveling east from Cumberland to Baltimore through the railway’s intersection with the 1400 block of Woodstock Road when one of its cars momentarily came off the tracks, only to return shortly thereafter.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the Howard County train accident. Two train accidents in the same day illustrates the fact that train accidents are more common than many people believe. Catastrophic injuries, and even death, can occur when a car is involved in a train wreck.
